Term 4, Week 4

Wow, we are up to Week 4 already!! The count down is on.

All the students have settled and are enthusiastic about the work they are doing.

Our major focus this term is our service project Giving in Kind - Pay it Forward.

The project begins this week!! The children have been given their 'seed' money today ($2) and have 4 weeks to make it grow. The children have to use thier gifts, talent and thinking skills to make their seed money grow. The ideas have been endless; from bake sales to car washes to making and selling items on Trade Me!! At the end of the 4 weeks we wil donate our money to a service organisation in the Wairarapa...we will be Paying it Forward.

We haven't decided who we will donate to as of yet. The children are busy researching organisations in our community. Each class has short listed 4, and have sent emails off asking why they should be the recipients of our money. Exciting stuff WATCH THIS SPACE!!

Term 3 is always a busy one for us at ODC!

Our sharing evening was in Week 9 and the theme for this year was sharing our passion.

We also had a small group of children present the work they had been doing with Joe P and Margaret F. These children have been working with Joe and Margaret to clean up the polluted Lakeview School Stream.

We welcomed many teachers, principals, parents, friends and extended family on the night. We were also very excited to see Masterton's Mayor and Mayoress and members from Masterton Trust Lands Trust (our major sponsors).

The build up to the evening is always a stressful one, but it is always throughly enjoyed by all on the night.
We had alot of positive feedback. Evryone had a fantastic time and thoroughly enjoyed taking part in our interactive activities.

Here are some pics of us and our displays....

You can see more pictures of our night in our personal blogs.

John Newton, our chess tutor, has been away this term. We were lucky enough to get Minty Hunter to introduce us to some highly complex board games. Minty and his wife Bex are the creative partners behind some of New Zealands newest board games. They are also web designers and animators. Check out Minty's webpage here.

We had great fun over several afternoons....

Sadly Tuesday Class farewelled Victoriya, our Russian tutor. She is moving up north with her family and is expecting a baby in the New Year. Our final Russian session was based on traditional Russian cuisine....and no, thete was no RUSSIAN FUDGE!! (as it isn't actually Russian) All the best for your new ventures Victoriya. We will miss you. We hopefully have a new tutor starting in term 4.

WEEK 9 - Trip to Wellington

The hill stayed open long enough for us to get over to Wellington for our much anticipated and planned GKPSI Trip...........Gifted Kids Pattern Search Investigation!! The weather was at its worst, so Te Papa had the pleaseure of hosting us for the morning before we made our way to Capital E's- The SoundHouse.

Our mission, as one of the finest detective agencies in the country, was to see if the rumour 'PATTERNS are taking over our city' was correct. We searched Te Papa to get an idea of how wide spread the problem might be. We had to collect evidence of our findings and stay under cover!!!

We had to.....
* collect evidence of patterns in each of the pattern types areas
- BEAUTY
- ORDER
- STRENGTH
- SURVIVAL

* Collect evidence of patterns in each of the Debatable Tryth areas
- A pattern repeats
- A pattern is a whole made up of several parts
- A pattern is natural or manmade
- A pattern has a purpose
- A pattern is used to predict

* Collect evidence of patterns in human behaviour

We then had numerous tasks that we could choose to do like;
* purchasing an item that demonstrated a pattern or part of a pattern (this was a popular one!)
* Collecting evidence of a broken pattern
* Creating and leaving behind a pattern
* Surveying people about patterns

Check out some of our 'evidence' of patterns.

One of the tasks was leave a pattern behind in the city. This is what one group did.

We then had a wonderful afternoon at The SoundHouse, using SONY ACID EXPRESS to create our own music.

Here is the link if you would like to listen

Here are some pictures. For most, this was the highlight of the day.

The hill was kind enough to stay open for our return home.....although we heard it did shut not long after we made it back to Lakeview.

Thanks to all our fabulous parents who helped on the day. We couldn't have done it without you!!

Week 3 OPEN DAYS

We had great fun sharing our days with our parents, grandparents, teachers and principals. The days ran pretty much as they usually would except for having a guest speaker, Warren Field, who talked to Wednesday class.....he forgot about Tuesday!!

Having another go at the handcuff challenge......we still didn't get it! We had to be shown the answer because we were all so frustrated! And yes it was easy when you knew how!

Mental edge...Sharing our thoughts on this statement...'Ancient traditional patterns are irrelevant in the 21st century'

A PMI (Plus, minus, interesting) on 'Everyone has to wear a cultural symbol'

Caitlinn's nana trying her hand at Russian

Warren Field talking to Wednesday class (he forgot to come on Tuesday!) about Wairarapa's water ways and eels. Did you know a female eel isn't ready for breeding until she is over 60 years old and that they beed once and then die???

Georgia's mum and Keziah's grandad having a go at beating us in chess......

A beautiful flax creation that Kyra brought to share with us. It was made by her clever aunty. We discussed how this fits into our concept on patterns and which visual art classes it had.
